In a recent discovery, Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of Ghana, revealed that before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Black Stars supporters pleaded with him to play for them again.
In an interview with the BBC conducted months before the World Cup in Qatar, the illustrious forward expressed his wish to compete there.
But because the 37-year-old had been inactive for the previous two years, Otto Adoo who was the Team’s Coach refused to invite him for selection.
Gyan claimed he wanted to come back because the supporters thought he could have an impact on the squad. Gyan most recently played for the Ghana Premier League team Legon Cities.
“There was lots of talk on the street, with people telling you that you can do it. I aimed to do it for the people and make them happy. They made me happy, and they are the same people calling me that you can do it,” he said, as quoted by Pulse.
So, he decided to go ahead and do it. To get to that level and see but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. He disclosed in one of the interviews.
“People took it wrong and started bashing me, saying some things, and insulting me.”
After all that, Gyan instead worked as a pundit for the South African channel Super Sports TV during the tournament. And now we all know how the Black Stars were eliminated at the group stage after losing two matches. Could Asamoah Gyan have made an impact?
