How To Check Validity of NHIS Card In Ghana

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has developed a dedicated NHIS USSD-based service for its members. To access the service, dial an easy-to-remember short code, *842*10#. Dial on any MTN or Vodafone number. It will be available on all networks in due course (as expected).

The NHIA service code – *842*10#, is also used by NHIS members to check the status of their NHIS Membership Eligibility, NHIS Benefit Package, and NHIS Medicines List. NHIA also provides the option to allow members to complete their annual membership renewals. This code lets members do that comfortably and safely from their mobile phones.

NHIS requests its members to be vigilant against fraudulent attempts by scammers to capture their mobile money PIN code. Please do not share your mobile money PIN code with anyone purporting to represent NHIS. (We will never ask for it).

The NHIA is continuously working to improve the convenience and satisfaction of our members in the membership renewal process. The aim is to reduce waiting times and queues at our district offices. We ask for your understanding and cooperation as we continuously review or test to improve the service when necessary.

More About The NHIS

The National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) was established by the Government of Ghana in 2003. It started under the auspices of the Kufuor administration. The program is a form of national health insurance established to provide equitable access and financial coverage for basic health care services to Ghanaian citizens.

Ghana’s universal healthcare system has been described as the most successful healthcare system on the African continent by business magnate Bill Gates. The system makes Ghana’s rate of health insurance one of the highest in Africa, though funding problems may complicate its future (according to research).

The objective of the NHIS is to secure the implementation of the national health insurance policy that ensures access to basic healthcare services for all residents of Ghana. Membership in the NHIS is mandatory for all residents of the country including foreign nationals legally resident in Ghana.

Thus, the policy requires registered residents to visit public hospitals and clinics with their NHIS card to enjoy benefits.
