Having your Ghanaian passport certifies your personal identity and nationality as a Ghanaian. You need your Passport to travel to and from foreign countries more easily and also access consular assistance.
Ghanaian passports are issued exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign affairs and regional integration. There are three types of passport booklets – contemporary (regular), service, and diplomatic passports.
Ghanaian passport booklets are valid for travel by Ghanaians anywhere in the world but the passport holder will require a visa from the country they intend visiting or travelling to.
The basic information on a Ghanaian passport are:
- Holder’s full name
- Photograph
- Place and date of birth
- Signature
- Expiration date of the passport
New Proposed Fees For Ghana Passport
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration recently summited a proposal before Parliament to adjust the current passport application fee from GH¢100 to GH¢644. That is over 500% increase in the current fee.
The Minister in her briefing of parliament stated that the proposed increment was necessary because it will enable the ministry to curb losses in the printing of passport booklets.
“It is time for Ghanaians to pay realistic prices for passports they acquire to travel beginning next year,”
She said in Parliament on Thursday 14th December,2023.
She further affirmed that it was due to financial constraint prevailing in the economy, and that it was no longer “sustainable” for the state to continue to subsidies passports.
Passports are no longer sources of identification as we all have our national ID. So if you need a passport and actually apply to get one, then it’s probably because you have intention to travel.
So, if you are going to travel or you intend to travel and you don’t have a passport, this is the right time to start your online application to acquire one. This can save you cost before the proposed price increment takes effect.
